Braids! By Robert Munsch. Illustrated by Dave Whamond. On Saturday, when Ashley was sitting at the
breakfast table, her mother came in and said, Look at your hair. Its a mess! It needs a few braids.
A few! Yelled Ashley. You always put in a million braids and
you pull on my hair and it hurts and it takes all day! NO! NO! NO! My hair is OK to just go out and play. Then Ashley ran around the house screaming
Ahhhh! Ahhhh! Ahhhh! Ahhhh! While her mother tried to catch her. After they had gone around the house seventeen
times, Ashleys mother caught her, sat her on a chair and started to braid her hair.
It took two hours because Ashleys mom braided her hair back and forth and back and forth and back and forth, AND up and down and up and down and up and down, AND round and round and round and round and round and round. When she was done, Ashley looked in the mirror
and said, Oh, look! Its beautiful. Its wonderful. But it took forever! I wish you didnt like to braid my hair.
Ashley went outside and sat down on the front steps. People came by and said, Hey, Ashley! Nice hair, and Ashley didnt say anything. Then Ashleys grandmother came by. She said, Ashley! What wonderful braids.
But why are you so mad? Its that mother of mine! Said Ashley. She likes to braid my hair and it takes all day. Some kids go to the mall, some kids play games,
I just get my hair braided. Do you know, said her grandmother, why
your mother likes to braid like that? No, said Ashley.
She learned it from me, said her grandmother. When your mom was a little girl I used to braid her hair all the time. It took all day. How come you dont braid her hair now?
Said Ashley.
Cant catch her, said her grandmother. Maybe both of us could catch her! Said Ashley. Good idea, said her grandmother. So they went into the house and Ashleys grandmother said to Ashleys mother, Look at your hair.
It needs some BRAIDS! NO, NO, NO! Yelled Ashleys mom. I am a grown up now and I have important
things to do! NO! NO! NO! NO! Ashleys grandmother said, Now come on,
sweet pea, Im going to braid your hair. Ashleys mom ran around the house screaming
Ahhhh! Ahhhh! Ahhhh! Ahhhh! While Ashley and her grandmother tried to catch her. They chased Ashleys mother around the house
seventeen times until they finally caught her.
Then they sat her in a chair and braided her
hair for three hours. It took three hours because they braided her hair back and forth and back and forth and back and forth, AND up and down and up and down and up and down, AND round and round and round and round and round and round. When they were done, Ashleys mother looked
in the mirror and said, Oh, look! Its beautiful. Its wonderful.
But it took forever. I wish you didnt like to braid my hair. Then Ashley and her mother sat out on the
front steps. Ashleys teacher came by and said, My! What lovely braids.
I wish I had hair like that. LETS GET HER! Said Ashley. Get WHO? Said the teacher. Get YOU! Said Ashley.
Were going to braid your hair and it will take all day! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Yelled the teacher. She ran down the street, and Ashley and her mom and her grandmother and all the neighbours ran after her. They chased the teacher around the block seventeen
times until Ashley finally caught her. Then they sat her on a mailbox and braided her hair.
It took six hours because they braided it back and forth and back and forth and back and forth, AND up and down and up and down
and up and down, AND round and round and round and round and round and round. When they were done the teacher had a thousand
little braids in her hair. She looked sort of like a porcupine. Looks nice! Said Ashleys grandmother.
Looks great! Said Ashleys mother. Wow! Said Ashleys teacher. Im going to wear these braids to school! And Ashley decided not to tell her teacher that sometimes people just do not look good in braids..
Hello, my name is Kat and welcome to my biggest book haul of the year. Oh Yeah, I have a lot of books to talk about in this video today now I actually only went to one day of book Expo this year So my book expo hall is at an all-time low I only got like eight books But I did get quite a few books in May and when I came home from Book Expo there were quite a few packages Waiting for me on my doorstep. So I still do have a ton of books to show you guys today So let's just get into it. Oh, but first an important personal announcement Carry On is getting a sequel for those of you who are new here my Favorite book of all time is carry on by Rainbow Rowell and it was just announced at book Con that there's gonna be a sequel in a couple of years, which is Gonna be rough but I am still so so excited and I've expressed that excitement on All of my social media platforms except this one because this is the first video I'm filming since we learned about this amazing development I will be talking about this in much more detail in the coming years hmmm But yeah, that's it I just wanted to tell you and share a bit of excitement and now let's get into the actual Books that I'm here to haul today first up is a book that I did buy and haul last year I think but it is the booksplosion book of the month before June So I just want to share that with you guys real quick.
I'm talking about Now I rise by Kirsten white This is the second book in the and I darken trilogy, which was a book Splosion book of the month in 2016 I believe and the third book in this trilogy is coming out in July so we're reading the second book the basic setup of the series is that it is a retelling of the life of Vlad the Impaler except Vlad is actually a girl in this retelling she is lada and she still has that same like bloodthirsty ambition but she has the added struggles of being a woman in this time period I love Kirsten White's books I've read almost all of them and I'm really excited to get back into this series and read the second book and then the third book in July when that comes out if you want to know a bit more about the first book in the series then I will link the More in-depth videos that I made about and I darken back in the day and I will also put in the description Down below all of the details about our read along this month if you want to join us also explosion is once again hosting a cosplay bash meetup at the Barnes & Noble in orange in near Anaheim It's happening June 20th the Wednesday before VidCon and while I am Not actually going to VidCon this year. I will be there for the cosplay bash So all of the details about that are also in the description The next book that I have here is a little do we know by Tamara Ireland stone and I received this copy as part of a paid promotion with Disney Book Group This is a standalone contemporary novel that just came out on June 5th. And what really intrigues me about this is That the essential relationship is not a romance there there is a romance in here from the sounds of the synopsis, but the main relationship the main focus of this book is the Friendship between these two girls who are actually not friends anymore there's this huge rift between them and it's told in alternating perspectives as we dive into the complexities of their relationship and The mystery of what happened? What went wrong to drive them apart? I haven't yet read anything by Tamara Ireland stone, but I have heard many amazing things about her work specifically about the depth and complexity of her characters and their relationships Yeah, I am very much looking forward to giving this a read next up. I have a box too unbox Do I need a knife to open this ready to open the box? You should never pull a knife towards you knife safety with Kat.
I know what I'm doing So this box is from sourcebooks who I'm working with this month to celebrated the release of fury born by Claire Legrand I have been hearing so many amazing things about this book, and I'm so excited to read it It's high fantasy, which I love and it's another book that's told in two different perspectives But in this case the two point-of-view characters are living centuries apart Which sounds so interesting? So yeah, I am very excited about this And now let's see what the rest of the goodies in this box are so I got this little notebook I always love notebooks because I have an obsession slash addiction to notebooks these cool Character cards, okay So this pin says ask me if I'm a son or blood Queen because of the two main characters one of them is a Sun Queen and one is a blood queen and I have a Confetti popper that is going to reveal to me which Queen I am. Do I just twist it? It's gonna hurt me. Oh, Okay, there's red confetti all over my carpet now I guess that means I'm a blood Queen which is honestly my preference because I don't like the Sun There's an envelope that's gonna tell me more. I know what you're thinking, but don't worry.
You're not the villain here Oh, man. Okay. I think that's everything. That was fun.
I'm a blood Queen I can't wait to read this book and see my Soul sisters my fellow Blood Queen just like kick ass and take names Hopefully I feel like that's what she should do. That's what I. Would do in my imagination but not in real life because I'm actually not that cool Anyways, next book next up. I have here vicious by ve Schwab the new paperback edition I already bought and read and loved the Original hardcover edition years ago, and I'm really excited that I got this in the mail a couple of weeks ago I saw all these amazing books two grand posts of This new paperback with like some cool props and stuff and I didn't think I was getting one of those boxes But I did I was writing for me on my doorstep when I came home from BEA.
It was such a happy surprise I love Victoria Schwab. She is one of my favorite authors of all time, and I'm so so excited For the sequel to this book, which is coming out later this year. I believe honestly, October also I am very grateful to I guess the publisher and whoever send me the box with this book and some other goodies the next book that I have here is Failing up by a Leslie Odom jr. Aka Aaron Burr sir earlier this year I kind of went on a spree of buying and reading some of these types of like Motivational self-help books.
I didn't haul them. Or really talked about them. I don't know why maybe because they're nonfiction. I don't know Maybe you'll do a video just about that if you guys would be interested But yeah, I bought this one because again I was in that spree of buying motivational books, but mostly because Leslie Odom jr Like I've seen him in interviews and I just really liked him and his perspective.
So I wanted to read this though I haven't read it yet, and I'm kind of regretting that I didn't get the Audiobook because he reads his own audiobook So I I kind of wish I bought that instead which I still might do actually I don't know. I'm looking forward to Consuming his words and thoughts and ideas in Physical or audio or however I decide to do that when I do it The next book that I have here is from twinkle with love by Sandhya Menon This is a standalone temporary about an indian-american girl named twinkle who as an aspiring Filmmaker and she gets involved with this Filmmaking project with these two boys one is her longtime crush and the other is his twin brother I Really enjoyed Sonya Menons debut novel when dimple met Richie and I am excited to read something else by her especially when I'm in the mood for something cute and Rom-com II then this is going to satisfy that need Perfectly, I feel then I have here an ember in the ashes and a torch against the night by Sabaa Tahir it did Already by hardcover editions of both of these books back in the day But the publisher just sent me these new Paperbacks with the new a cover design and I love these they look so cool And I cannot wait for the third book in the series, which is coming up this month this week next week Very soon. I'm excited. The next book that I have here is ice wolves by Amie Kaufman This is the first book in a new middle grade series and also the first book that Amie Kaufman has done solo she co-wrote the Starbound trilogy with Meagan Spooner and the illuminae series with Jay Kristoff and I loved both of these so I am very Excited to see what she does in her first solo novel I'm also interested in reading some more middle grade because I haven't been reading much of it lately But I'm kind of in that mood, you know, it's summertime I want something a little bit lighter and fun without much angst the basic idea of this book is that there are ice wolves and scorched dragons and they are enemies and live deeply separate lives and the story really focuses on these twelve year old twins because one of them takes the elemental form of an ice wolf and the other takes the elemental form of a scorched dragon and That is like I'm heard of are they even related what's going on? Oh, yeah I am super intrigued by this and I cannot wait to give it a go Then I have here save the date by a Morgan Matson.
Oh my god, it's sign It says off the cover side first edition I should have known that this is a standalone Contemporary about a teenage girl named Charlie whose older sister is getting married so all of her older siblings the whole family is like gathering together for one big weekend before Charlie has to go off to college but then things start going wrong like the wedding planner quits and things go missing and things show up that aren't supposed to be there and it's just chaos and if the cover of this book, Tells me anything about the story. It's that first. There's an adorable dog in it So I'm here for that and second. It's going to be a Hilarious fun summer read next up.
I have a book that I just received unsolicited in the mail But I'm happy to have it because it's this like gorgeous Paperback edition of strange the dreamer Laini Taylor is one of my favorite authors like the way she uses language and tell stories and builds worlds and characters I'm just constantly in awe of her. I actually have not yet read this book I did buy the hardcover like ages ago and I'm just I'm nervous to read it because I have such high expectations but I'm going to be reading it very very very soon. Because I. Have a copy of music nightmares the sequel the second book in This new ology at the first party of BEA the first book that I got during BEA week was this beautiful highly anticipated book right here And I'm just I am so ready to dive into this world and read both of these back-to-back I hope my expectations are met I feel like they will be because Laini Taylor is amazing She's not gonna let me down also at the party where I got muse of nightmares I got frost blood by Le Blanc and in addition to hearing The amazing Laini Taylor talked about her process and whatnot We also got to hear Ellie Blake talk a little bit about her process and as soon as she mentioned How much she loved? Avatar the last airbender and that that this book isn't super avatar ish But just being vaguely inspired by avatar and the fact that she really liked Zuko I just I'm so intrigued by this so I'm very excited that I got a copy and I could give it a try like I mentioned at the Beginning of this video.
I only went to one day of book exile I only went on Thursday and I'm okay with that because I still got a nice little selection of books the first book that I got was kind of the main one that I. Really wanted and that is city of ghosts by Victoria Schwab, one of the first things I did when I got to Book Expo was stopped by the scholastic table to ask them when if at all they were going to be giving away these books and The lady was just like oh you want that book? Let me grab it for you right now, and she just she just gave it like immediately I just had it in my hand. Once again, I love Victoria Schwab. I love her writing.
I love her stories She is one of my favorite authors So, of course, I am very very excited to read any book by her But especially a middle-grade one It's not a girl named Kass who almost died or she kind of did die But she came back and now she can see ghosts and her best friend is a ghost and then kass's parents Get this job hosting a TV show That's about the world's most haunted places and Kass is kind of thrust even deeper into this world of ghosts and She has a lot to learn about herself and her gift and it just it sounds really cool another book that I got from Scholastic because I again I just asked them like hey, are you handing out this book later today? And they said here you can have it now Imposters by scott westerfeld's this is a new book in the world of the uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld which I. Loved I've read all three books of the uglies trilogy and also Extras which is like a companion to that original trilogy. So this is the first book in a new series That is following different characters but is set in the same world as the uglies trilogy and the Extras companion novel and I I cannot wait. I love this world I'm so excited to revisit it and see like what new? Direction we go in the next book that I have here is bridge of clay by Markus Zusak now I've only read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, but that book was amazing and so powerful and so well written and well done and Moving and I just I am very much looking forward to reading more by him And this is his new book that's coming out this fall It's about these five brothers who raised themselves after their mother died And now their father has returned and they kind of have to face and uncover these family secrets, it sounds really interesting and Honestly after the book thief I have so much faith in Markus Zusak to tell a good story Like I'm I'm just I'm in the next book that I have here is the dark deep by Ally Condie and Brendon Reich's This is an another middle grade book.
It's been kind of pitched as reminiscent to Stranger things and the Goonies basically it's about this group of kids that discovers this Mysterious spooky island where no island is supposed to be and it's just about like the mystery and adventure of figuring out what it is and What is going on there. The next book that I have here is The Odd One Out by Nick Stone and I got it signed I had wait a long time in this line, but I got it signed basically this book is kind of about a love triangle, but it's not a traditional guy choosing between two girls kind of love triangle because there's also a relationship going on between the girls like all three of the main characters are just trying to figure themselves out and figure out their relationships and kind of questioning what they want and discovering their sexuality in some cases and it just sounds fantastic I am so excited to read this. Next up I have the biggest book that I got at Book Expo this year and maybe that I've ever gotten at Book Expo any year and that is the Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. This book is gigantic it's over 800 pages and it's not coming out until March of next year, so I got a very very early copy.
I don't know how Samantha Shannon does it because she is still currently writing the Bone Season series so like when did she have the time to start a new gigantic fantasy series? I don't know but I am very intrigued. I really enjoyed the bone season and I definitely want to continue that series but this just caught my attention because it's so big and so unexpected and yeah, I'm very excited to check this out. Next up, I have here Dry Neal Schusterman co-written with his son Jared Schusterman. Neal Shusterman has written a ton of books including most recently hyped on booktube the Scythe series? Trilogy? I know there's two books out so far and I haven't read any of them yet But my friend Emma really really wanted this book So I waited in line with her and we got copies this book is kind of set in the near future and it's basically about what happens when the California drought becomes like Catastrophically bad.
As someone who has lived in California her entire life, I. Feel like this book is gonna hit a little bit too close to home But I am very excited to read it and I'm really intrigued by the sort of like very near future pseudo dystopian kind of Framing of this story. Then I have here Fawkes by Nadine Brandis. I actually met Nadine at YALLWEST and we had a fantastic time just chatting about Writing and YouTube and I kind of convinced her to start a YouTube channel So I'm gonna shout that out and link her down below So you guys can check that out if you want to.
This is a standalone Historical fantasy and I am so here for all of that Even if I didn't know Nadine and think she was like super cool and super sweet I would be so into this book just for that reason for standalone Historical fantasy like I can't wait to read this. And finally I have here The Demon in the Trees by Ben Sanders. Now this is an indie published book that Ben actually gave me directly because he watches my videos and He said that my NaNoWriMo videos helped him write this during NaNoWriMo, which is just so cool So thank you Ben for your kind words and for giving me a copy of your book I'm really excited to read this and he actually has a YouTube channel as well So I will link down below in case any of you guys want to check that out. Alright, that is it Those are all of the books for this video today My voice is gone because I'm still a little bit sick from Book Expo, but it's fine.
Everything's fine. We're we're done It's fine. Thank you so much for watching. I hope you enjoyed this video I hope you have a wonderful night, and I will have another video up soon.
*Cameraman*And, action! *Interviewer*So, Mr. James- *James*Is this rolling? Uh, yes. And, action!(That's a lot of takes) So Mr. James, is it true that you wrote a book? Oh, THAT thing?*Wheeze* Yes, the rumors are true.
One afternoon, I was just thinking to myself "Why aren't I a published author yet?" So I just jotted down some notes and doodles and then I thought, "You know people should pay money for this." (Silence for a second) So like it's just a bunch of pictures? No! I added WORDS too! It's a collection of stories and opinions of mine. Some of which I've already made into videos and some that are completely original news stories like one chapter is all about the science fair and Yeah, it is the same story. I used in the YouTube video But I also go more in depth with a story and I draw new pictures Youtubers have a reputation of writing bad books. Does this concern you Oh, Bad books, huh? I'll have you know that my book was the number one best-selling book in literature criticism in theory Do I know what that means? No, but did I beat tyrant Shakespeare on politics? Yes Does that mean I'm better than William Shakespeare himself I'll let you be the judge when you pick up your copy of the book link in the description I'll give you a clue the answers.
Yes are all authors as condescending as you do you even know what that word means? James is there anything special that happens to people who order at VidCon? Yeah, the people who pre-order at VidCon get a signed copy What about people who aren't going if it comes sucks to be them come on, haha That was a good joke. So I actually am gonna be selling signed copies I'll be signing the first 1000 copies to people who pre-order the book on my website check the link in the description Also speaking of my site. I've revamped the whole thing and got a bunch of new merchandise Check it out. If you have some free time Christmas is right around the corner guys There's also non signed copies available If you just want to preorder it regularly or you can wait until August when the book comes out and buy it at Barnes & Noble or your local bookstore and Depending on how well these sign copies sell.
I'll release more. We'll see if you're interested then I'll update everything on Twitter So follow me on Twitter to be updated anyway author sure can be stuck-up sometimes like this one time when this pretty well established author was coming to my town and Doing a signing I say well-established, but I'm sure if I said his name you guys wouldn't actually know who he is Anyway at his signing he gave an hour-long talk and he said he wasn't gonna do a Q&A. Segment because he said he'd been an author for so long that he felt that he already answered every question ever Okay mister Yahoo! Answers Sorry our questions bothered you so much and then after you listen to him talk you got to go up to meet him to get A book signed, but he was the most stereotypical I'm too good for you celebrity I've ever seen when you got to his table He didn't say anything to you. And if you wanted a picture, he wouldn't even look up at the camera So my family has this picture of all of us standing and smiling next to this guy.
Just looking down reading a book So I will follow in that author's footsteps and only take pictures with fans while signing my book and looking like this Contrast to that when I met Steven pastis pestis, I just should have looked up how to spell say it He's the creator of a comic strip called pearls before swine and all you need to know is that his comics are in the newspaper? And he's really great. He came to visit Arizona and I was 15 at the time So I was making stick-figure comics and I wanted to impress Steven So I got out my ruler and protractor and I very carefully drew this comic. How was your run? Well, let's just say justin is all pooped out What happened I don't want to talk about it get it he pooped his pants this isn't based off anything in real life Okay, I was 15 shut up. I went to his book signing.
He was really awesome I showed him my comic he laughed and he told me to keep going and now I'm a youtuber I. Mean, it wasn't just what he said that got me into doing comics in YouTube. I wanted to do that way before I met him Anyway, he was nice ironically enough I was never a fan of reading and I think a big part of it was that teachers forced you to read books you didn't Want to read so if this book becomes the next Romeo and Juliet or Grapes of Wrath and teachers make their students write book reports on this book They don't make it easy for all of you in the description of this video. I will create an already completed book report for this Book now.
I know what some of you are thinking James won't the teachers know if all the book reports are the same Yes, they will which is why I added some blank spaces for you to put in your own words It's sort of like a mad lib that you turn in for homework This book report doesn't even have to be on my book. You can use it for any book So if you have a book report due tomorrow, then check the link in the description. Trust me You'll get at least an 80% you know, the people who already pre-ordered this book are pretty ballsy They don't even know what this books about for all they know It could have just been a single picture of me laughing and all the money they gave me but it's not that I promise That's just the inside sleeve and that's the end of the video everyone. I'll see you at VidCon.
I have an announcement that you might not think is super interesting, but just stick with me for a second. I'm announcing the end papers of my book. What's that? Let me tell you! Here's one of my very - here's one of my favorite books of the last ten years, it's called Shaman, its about a person...Who's alive...A long time ago... And...The adventures that they have.
So when you open up a hardcover book, there's the jacket, and then you open here, and this first piece of paper and you probably have never noticed this before, especially in, like, normal - normal books, where it's just a blank sheet of paper. It's different. It's a different stock. It's a different weight paper.
It's heavier paper than the rest of the book. This sheet of paper is actually one sheet of paper that like, it covers the whole thing, it's glued onto the whole thing, it's part of the book binding process. Here's a book you may have heard of called The Fault In Our Stars. When you open it, the end pages are a color.
They're this color. They're this like dark, uhh grey kind of color. They're... I've got another example down here.
This is Arlo Finch and the Valley of Fire That opens to this nice maroon end page, cause they're just a sheet that is glued on as part of the book binding process to make everything sturdy, basically. This is The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon and it has this big beautiful sheet of paper with, ah, an image, uh an icon from the book And then we have things like patterns like this, uh, cool lookin' thing that I don't know what it is but it's cool lookin' and sort of reminds you of the book this is Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss Finally, I'm going to show you the end pages for What If which is an illustrated thing by the guy who does XKCD about like answering weird hypothetical questions Its end pages are this illustrated thing and that's not super surprising cause it's Randall and he does illustrations and they just sort of complied a bunch of cool stuff to make into the end pages for that book. And there's also, this is a cool thing about this book, The dust jacket is printed on the interior. This is a cool map of the, what the world would look like if the oceans started to drain away.
All these things are things that people do to make books cooler so that when you open them, you will be more likely to see something that's like, "Oh, that's exceptional, maybe I will think about this book a little bit longer." Right now, the only copy of my book that I have is this uncorrected galley, an advanced reader's copy, I think is what that- advanced reading copy is what that stands for, and it, on the inside, has like information about me, 'cause these are for booksellers and libraries and, uh, so to try to like help them make the decision about whether they want to buy or how many copies they want to buy for their store or for their library. And throughout this video, I've probably probably been saying both "end pages" and "end papers" and possibly "end sheets," I don't think I've said that. But end papers and end sheets are the same thing. They're the piece of paper that goes over the ends of the book.
End pages isn't a thing. I just say that because (mumbling) it sounds like a thing, it sounds like it should be a thing, but it's not a page of the book, it's literally a piece of paper, or a sheet of paper. Anyway, I. Got an email from uh, my publisher and they were like "what do you want for your end papers?" And I was like "what's an end paper? I don't know what that is.
Ah, is it an end page? I'll call it that forever, from now on" and, uh so I went to some bookstores and I just looked at a bunch of end papers and thought about that and what I would want, and then I was like "can we do an illustration?" And to be clear, like, this has been part of the book binding process for forever, and like there's a history of cool weird like all the way back into early book binding of cool like, cool end papers. So I, you know, I liked the idea of just doing a color but then I also really like taking any opportunity to give work to designers who I like so I was like "how much money do I have for this?" And they were like "this much" and I was like "can I have more?" And they were like "no" and so we worked together and uh, they gave me this much money and I then gave - I. Put in more money than that so that we could have some really cool end papers. The, uh, I reached out to a designer who had done just like sort of, because he's a fan of John or, like me, or of Nerdfighteria in general, done some cool art before, goes by the name Tekst on the Internet, T-E-K-S-T, uh, his actual name is Jason and I said "what would you do?" And he gave me some ideas I really like his work because he, like, he builds images with words um, which I think is metaphorically resonant.
I also really like it when art is spelled out for me so I don't have to to be confused because that's just how I got a really literal brain sometimes, uh so I'm a fan of that, I'm a fan of his work. He has done lots of stuff just for our community in general in the past without us even asking and so I wanted to work with him on some what I was hoping would be some pretty exceptional end papers. And I think that what we ended up with is absolutely so good. I almost said absolutely remarkable.
It's true you can tell, but I- I didn't do it, I avoided this, I have noticed that I have a tick about absolutely remarkable, and I need to work on that because people will make fun of me from now on, for that phrase. So he sent me some ideas for what that might look like. I responded and sort of said "this is what I. Like about the-" and he was really thorough, and a great guy to work with Um, you know it's really great to work with people who have been in, like doing freelance stuff for a long long time.
We started to get some stuff back and forth, I thought it was really cool but like not all the way there, and then, uh, you know, more and more iterations, and I was happy with where we were, and then like there was a little bit of radio silence and suddenly, like BWAHH this image appeared in my inbox and it was like this took it to a whole new level and it I mean I basically said, you know, like, maybe we can put in some more detail here and there and then the level of detail that eventually got added was just intense. He's written a big long blogpost about this, I mean, not that long, about like the process of working together him and me, and about his process of doing the design and what software he was using and how this all came together and you know, like, all of- none of this was done by a computer program, like every...It looks kind of like, procedurally generated or something, but indeed he laid down every building, every window, every water tower, everything. I mean it's so good. And I love getting a little look behind the scenes at how something like this comes together so I thought I would offer that to you and I'm really excited that this is going to be the end papers for the US.
Edition of the book. I don't think that it's going to be used in any of the other editions. They, uh, different publishers do different things. I don't really understand how it works to be totally honest with you.
But I wanna say thanks to Jason and I wanted to say this is how something like this comes together and that's why there are end papers. It's a functional, structural thing of the book but then it also gives you a creative opportunity and say thanks to Dutton for making a book and helping me help Jason help me make end papers, I guess..
A BAD CASE OF STRIPES. By David Shannon. Camilla Cream loved lima beans. But she never ate them.
All of her friends hated lima beans, and she
wanted to fit in. Camilla was always worried about what other
people thought of her. Today she was fretting even more than usual. It was the first day of school, and she couldnt
decide what to wear.
There were so many people to impress! She tried on forty-two outfits, but none seemed
quite right. She put on a pretty red dress and looked in
the mirror. Then she screamed. Her mother ran into the room, and she screamed, too.
Oh my heavens! She cried. Youre completely covered with stripes! This was certainly true. Camilla was striped from head to toe. She looked like a rainbow.
Mrs. Cream felt Camillas forehead. Do you feel all right? She asked. I feel fine, Camilla answered, but
just look at me! You get back in bed this instant, her
mother ordered.
Youre not going to school today. Camilla was relieved. She didnt want to miss the first day of school, but she was afraid of what the other kids would say. And she had no idea what to wear with those
crazy stripes.
That afternoon, Dr. Bumble came to examine Camilla. Most extraordinary! He exclaimed. Ive never seen anything like it.
Are you having any coughing, sneezing, runny
nose, aches, pains, chills, hot flashes, dizziness, drowsiness, shortness of breath, or uncontrollable
twitching? No, Camilla told him. I feel fine. Well then, Dr. Bumble said, turning to Mrs.
Cream, I dont see any reason why she shouldnt go to school tomorrow. Heres some ointment that should help clear
up those stripes in a few days. If it doesnt, you know where to reach me. And off he went.
The next day was a disaster. Everyone at school laughed at Camilla. They called her Camilla Crayon and Night
of the Living Lollipop. She tried her best to act as if everything were normal, but when the class said the Pledge of Allegiance, her stripes turned red, white, and blue, and she broke out in stars! The other kids thought this was great.
One yelled out, Lets see some purple polka dots! Sure enough, Camilla turned all purple polka-dotty. Someone else shouted, Checkerboard!
And a pattern of squares covered her skin. Soon everyone was calling out different shapes
and colors, and poor Camilla was changing faster than you can change channels on a T.V. That night, Mr.
Harms, the school principal, called. Im sorry, Mrs. Cream, he said. Im going to have to ask you to keep
Camilla home from school.
Shes just too much of a distraction, and Ive been getting calls from the other parents. Theyre afraid those stripes may be contagious. Camilla was so embarrassed. She couldnt believe that two days ago everyone
liked her.
Now, nobody wanted to be in the same room with her. Her father tried to make her feel better. Is there anything I can get you, sweetheart? He asked. No, thank you, sighed Camilla.
What she really wanted was a nice plate of lima beans, but she had been laughed at enough for one day. Hmm, well, yes, I see, Dr. Bumble mumbled
when Mr. Cream phoned the next day.
I think Id better bring in the Specialists. Well be right over. About an hour later, Dr. Bumble arrived with
four people in long white coats.
He introduced them to the Creams. This is Dr. Grop, Dr. Sponge, Dr.
Cricket,
and Dr. Young. Then the Specialists went to work on Camilla. They squeezed and jabbed, tapped and tested.
It was very uncomfortable. Well, its not the mumps, concluded Dr. Grop. Or the measles, said Dr.
Sponge. Definitely not chicken pox, put in Dr. Cricket. Or sunburn, said Dr.
Young. Try these, said the Specialists. They each handed her a bottle filled with
different colored pills. Take one of each before bed, said Dr.
Grop. Then they filed out the front door, followed by Dr. Bumble. That night, Camilla took her medicine.
It was awful. When she woke up the next morning, she did feel different, but when she got dressed, her clothes didnt fit right. She looked in the mirror, and there, staring back at her, was a giant, multi-colored pill with her face on it. Dr.
Bumble rushed over as soon as Mrs. Cream called. But this time, instead of the Specialists, he brought the Experts. Dr.
Gourd and Mr. Mellon were the finest scientific
minds in the land. Once again, Camilla was poked and prodded,
looked at and listened to. The Experts wrote down lots of numbers.
Then they huddled together and whispered. Dr. Gourd finally spoke. It might be a virus, he announced with
authority.
Suddenly, fuzzy little virus balls appeared
all over Camilla. Or possibly some form of bacteria, said Mr. Mellon. Out popped squiggly little bacteria tails.
Or it could be a fungus, added Dr. Gourd. Instantly, Camilla was covered with different colored fungus blotches. The Experts looked at Camilla, then at each other.
We need to go over these numbers again back at the lab, Dr. Gourd explained. Well call you when we know something. But the Experts didnt have a clue, much less a cure.
By now, the T.V. News had found out about Camilla. Reporters from every channel were outside her house, telling the story of The Bizarre Case of the Incredible Changing Kid. Soon a huge crowd was camped out on the front lawn.
The Creams were swamped with all kinds of
remedies from psychologists, allergists, herbalists, nutritionists, psychics, an old medicine
man, a guru, and even a veterinarian. Each so-called cure only added to poor Camillas strange appearance until it was hard to even recognize her. She sprouted roots and berries and crystals
and feathers and a long furry tail. But nothing worked.
One day, a woman who called herself an Environmental
Therapist claimed she could cure Camilla. Close your eyes, she said. Breathe deeply, and become one with your room. I wish you hadnt said that, Camilla groaned.
Slowly, she started to melt into the walls of her room. Her bed became her mouth, her nose was a dresser,
and two paintings were her eyes. The therapist screamed and ran from the house. What are we going to do?" Cried Mrs.
Cream. It just keeps getting worse and worse! She began to sob. At that moment, Mr. Cream heard a quiet little
knock at the front door.
He opened it, and there stood an old woman
who was just as plump and sweet as a strawberry. Excuse me, she said brightly. But I think I can help. She went into Camillas room and looked around.
My goodness, she said with a shake of her head. What we have here is a bad case of stripes. One of the worst Ive every seen! She pulled a container of small green beans from her bag. Here, she said.
These might do the trick. Are those magic beans? Asked Mrs. Cream. Oh my, no, replied the kind old woman.
Theres no such thing. These are just plain old lima beans. Ill bet youd like some, wouldnt you?
She asked Camilla. Camilla wanted a big, heaping plateful of lima beans more than just about anything, but she was still afraid to admit it.
Yuck! She said. No one likes lima beans, especially me! Oh, dear, the old woman said sadly. I guess I was wrong about you. She put the beans back in her bag and started
toward the door.
Camilla watched the old woman walk away. Those beans would taste so good. And being laughed at for eating them was nothing,
compared to what shed been going through. She finally couldnt stand it.
Wait! She cried. The truth is I really love lima beans. I thought so, the old woman said with a smile. She took a handful of beans and popped them
into Camillas mouth.
Mmmm, said Camilla. Suddenly the branches, feathers, and squiggly
tails began to disappear. Then the whole room swirled around. When it stopped, there stood Camilla, and
everything was back to normal.
Im cured! She shouted. Yes, said the old woman. I knew the real you was in there somewhere. She patted Camilla on the head.
Then she went outside and vanished into the crowd. Afterward, Camilla wasnt quite the same. Some of the kids at school said she was weird,
but she didnt care a bit. She ate all the lima beans she wanted, and she never had even a touch of stripes again..
In the saturated realm of compact cars
there are good reasons to buy the seventh-generation Volkswagen Jetta, but
they are not the reasons you'd expect. As the product of a German carmaker you
might expect crisp handling from an Autobahn tuned suspension, but hit a bump
in the Jetta and the suspension floats, like me, squishily absorbing the impact.
Yeah, I know, squishily isn't it word. With sharp steering inputs body roll is
pronounced. If you want taut European driving fun, look outside of Europe.
Softer damping and a simplistic torsion beam rear suspension might dull the
Jetta's thrill quotient, but it doesn't hamper comfort.
For cruising or simply
commuting the Jetta is an excellent choice. In many ways it's more Corolla
than the Corolla, sorry Corolla. Adding to the pile of pragmatic delights
are a highly adjustable driving position, welcoming seats with oddly good lateral
support for rear passengers, superior outward visibility supported by rear
corner windows, and a large center storage area cleverly constructed of
light-colored plastic so you can easily find the stuff inside. As for passenger
space palatial might be over selling it but not by much.
Seated behind my preferred driving position head, knee and foot clearance
are outstanding for a compact car.
While we're on the subject of knee clearance,
this bit of the steering column hits my knees, well vice versa,
when I get in or when I'm just adjusting my legs, and no I'm not going to drive
like this like some kind of idiot. Look I'm driving a bus. In addition to
unexpected knee bruises the Jetta's quirks include rear windows that only open this
much, weirdly low center vents, and absence of
vents for rear-seat passengers, and at least in our test car an ultra finicky
sunglass holder. Hopping back on the complement train the Jetta excels as a
cargo hauler with a large 14.1-Cubic foot trunk and standard 60/40 split
folding seats, just mind the gooseneck hinges so nothing gets crushed.
To some
eyes the Jetta might seem plain outside and in. Whatever your take the interior
is functionally arranged featuring simple controls, soft touch points,
abundant door storage, a useful USB. Adjacent bin for your phone, and an
infotainment screen smartly angled towards the driver. Interacting with the
screen while you're driving can be super distracting, but it's much less
distracting when that screen is easy to reach and to see.
Poke. The logically
arranged interface is displayed on a standard 6.5-Inch or on higher trims
eight-inch touchscreen and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across
the board. Yes, even on the bass S trim which starts
well below $20,000 with destination charges and includes all the
essentials like alloy wheels, AC, cruise control and even full LED lights.
Budget an extra $800 if you want to swamp the bass car's 6-speed manual for
the 8-speed automatic transmission that's standard on all other trims.
Speaking of the eight-speed, it shifts quickly and smoothly and helps maximize
the modest output of the Jetta's 1.4-Liter turbocharged four-cylinder. With
the 1.4-Liter acceleration is adequate once you get off the line.
Where the
small displacement really pays off is fuel economy. Who wants 40 mpg on the freeway? And
that's running regular unleaded instead of premium like some turbocharged engines.
In town fuel economy is strong, too, aided by an automatic start/stop system that
cuts the engine when the vehicle is motionless. When automatic engine
start/stop systems first appeared they kind of sucked. The restarts were really
jarring but in the Jetta restarts are quick and uneventful.
You may have
reached the point where reaching down and pushing the off button is more
annoying than just letting the system do its job. Good job, good job, you're so much
better than all those terrible systems used to be. If we're being honest
Volkswagen's reliability has varied over the years. If let's say you were to have
bought a super unreliable 2005 Volkswagen Touareg you might appreciate
the Jettas sixty or seventy-two thousand mile transferable warranty, bumper to
bumper yo.
If you're ready to join Team Jetta
what should you get? For our money the SE. Is the play. For about $23,000 it adds heated front seats, dual zone
automatic climate control, keyless access with push button star,t and helpful
safety upgrades like blind spot monitoring and forward collision warning
with automatic braking. Climb to the SEL.
And SEL Premium trims if you want
adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, Beats premium audio, leather seats with
ventilation that can be activated in concert with the seat heaters, and this
cool reconfigurable 10.25-Inch digital gauge cluster swiped from
VW's luxury division Audi. Thank you Audi. Lastly there's the Jetta R line
to consider offering sporty-er looks and electronic differential control for
improved power delivery and corners. Though if it's performance you want
maybe save your pennies for a V-dub that starts with the G and ends with an I.
Butt before any of that let's roll out the competitors, which include the
ubiquitous Honda Civic, the fun-loving Mazda 3, the all-wheel drive Subaru
Impreza and countless others.
The seventh-generation Volkswagen Jetta may not be a Teutonic bliss factory but
it is a comfortable, spacious, value-packed, inoffensive sedan with a
long warranty.
For many compact car buyers it's a winning combination..
(Upbeat music) - Yeah, just hold on a minute. This is when it gets to the good part. So throughout the course of history over 130 million books
have been published, so obviously humans have
a thirst for knowledge. And when you think of
books, what do you think of? Harry Potter, The
Alchemist, the Bible, maybe? Well, what about books
that replicate themselves or predict the future? Well today I'm going to show you a list of books that actually existed that defy all logic by existing at all.
So let's jump right into it. These are the 10 most
mysterious books in history. Number one is the Book of Soyga. Also known as Aldaraia, the Book of Soyga is a legendary book that exists right now in the UK.
That is said to have been
presented to Adam himself by the angels of God
in the Garden of Eden. The 197 pages of the book
consists of everything from spells, rituals, and
information on other magics, demonology, and astrology. The first known owner of
this book was John Dee, a well-known Elizabethan
mathematician, astrologer, and consultant to the court of the queen. He possessed over 3,000 books, which was the largest library
in England at the time.
After his death, however, the book seemed to vanish from existence only to suddenly resurface in not one but two
different places in 1994. One was the British Library in London and the other was the
Bodleian Library in Oxford. Okay, so obviously the existence
of this book defies logic but what also defies logic is why this guy had over 3,000 books. I mean, I'm all about hobbies and whatnot but go see some sunlight, man.
Number two is the Rohonc Codex. All 448 pages of this book
are written in a language that to this day is still indecipherable. The Rohonc Codex's words are written from right
to left on each page and are accompanied by 87 illustrations of military battles, landscapes, and other images that may
have religious influence. Scholars have noted that
the number of symbols used in the book are 10 ten times those
in any known alphabet.
The codex was discovered
in 1700 in Hungary and since then many have
tried to decipher it with wildly different translations. The fact is this mysterious book may never be truly understood,
kind of like Michael Jackson. That man was an enigma. Rest in peace.
Number three is the Great Omar Book. The full title of this book is (clears throat) the Sangorski Edition of the
Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Well that's quite the mouthful. Francis Sangorski was a
bookbinder from London who started a firm in 1901 and created the first of what many claim to be the most cursed book of all time.
The book that Sangorski made found its way to the
bottom of the Atlantic when it sank with, of
all things, the Titanic. Then there was a second copy made using Sangorski's original drawings which was destroyed soon after completion in the early days of World War II. When London was bombed during the Blitz. It then took 40 years to
finish the third copy, which was donated to the British Library after its maker, Stanley Bray, died.
You know, maybe I'm just pragmatic, but I would just not touch the book. I don't care what secrets lie within, it's goin' kill me, man! Be pragmatic, don't touch those pages. Number four are The
Prophecies of Nostradamus. Possibly the most famous
book on this list, The Prophecies of Nostradamus
is one that is widely claimed to have predicted several
major events in human history.
These include the rise of
Napoleon and Adolf Hitler, the Great Fire of London, the dropping of the first nuclear bomb, and even the September 11th attacks on the World Trade
Center in New York City. ( A.K.A. 9/11) People seem to consistently
be linking every disaster, both those that occur naturally
and those that are man-made, to the words that Michel de
Nostradame wrote 400 years ago. Now this is highly contested
with many believing that these predictions are 100% accurate and some that just call them out as false.
Personally, I would love to
be able to predict the future but not just the things that are bad. I feel like that would make
you a bit of a party pooper. Hey Matt, nice to meet you. You're going to lose your job tomorrow.
Okay, good chat! Number five is the Ripley Scroll book. Named after the 15th
century Augustinian monk and alchemist George Ripley, the Ripley Scroll reads
almost like a journal and it's essentially a real
life wizard's spell book. It chronicles the man's
travels across Europe as he combed the land
in search of immortality and the secrets behind transmutation. Legend has it that he was
able to change lead into gold with a spell contained within the pages by creating the philosopher's stone.
This, of course, in turn was used to
make the elixir of life, which many claim had
made the monk immortal. Now history claims that
the man died in 1490 but he may still be out there somewhere, waiting, drinkin' on that sweet elixir. Number six is the Popol Vuh. According to a tale told
by Francisco Ximenez, a Dominican priest, the Popol Vuh was a
manuscript given to him when in 1701, he visited a
small town in Guatemala.
The Popol Vuh, which translates
to the Book of the People, contains an elaborate creation
story involving four deities, a brief history of the planet,
and cosmology teachings. Though he cites his source
as a parishioner in the town, no similar manuscript has ever been found. There are some scholars who argue that he should never have
been given access to the pages since it was considered
a closely guarded secret. The Popol Vuh is definitely
a book shrouded in mystery.
Number seven are the Beale Ciphers. The Beale ciphers are
basically like the beginning of a real-life national treasure. The pages are actually a trio of ciphers which lead to a massive hidden treasure of gold, silver, and jewels worth nearly, brace yourself, $63 million. As legend has it, in 1820 the pages were given
in a box by Thomas Beale to an innkeeper in Virginia
named Robert Morris.
The box was given with the instruction that he should only open the box if Beale did not return within 10 years. And of course, Beale disappeared so naturally, Morris opened the box and began trying to break the code written on the papers inside. In all of history, only one of the pages has ever been deciphered and it took, believe it or not, the Declaration of Independence
as a key to unlock it. And you guys thought I was joking about the national treasure thing.
Neither of the codes have
ever been broken to this day and many claim that the
treasure is still out there waiting to be found. I think it would be
hilarious after decades somebody finally cracked the Beale cipher and they open the box
and instead of treasure it's just, like, a note that says Lo lo lo lo lo lo lo
lo lo lo lo lo lo lo That would be money. ($ _ $) Number eight are the Dead Sea Scrolls. Discovered in 11 caves across
the shore of the Dead Sea, starting with one that
two goat herders found, the Dead Sea Scrolls are considered the greatest manuscript
discovery of modern times.
They were found between 1947 and 1956 and contain, amongst other things, the oldest collection of
Old Testament manuscripts ever discovered. These included prophecies
by Ezekiel, Daniel, and Jeremiah that had never
been found in the Bible before. The scrolls themselves are
unbelievably over 2,000 years old and at least one of them
is an ancient treasure map to 64 different buried treasures. Look, I appreciate that the (mimics goat) goat herders handed these
in for historical purposes, but if I found a treasure map like that that led to 64 different big treasures, you would never see me again.
(The wild baldo goes extinct) I would be on an island
bathing in gold and jewels. Sorry, historians. Number nine is the Liber Linteus. The Liber Linteus only
contains 1,200 words written on 230 lines but what makes it truly unique is what those words are written on and also what it was used for later.
The ancient text refers to the Etruscans, people who populated italy before the rise of the Roman Empire. It's scribed on linen, making it the only known
example of a book made that way. Interestingly after the Etruscans fell their Roman conquerors would
have destroyed the text if for not how it was
preserved and hidden. The Liber Linteus was written on wrappings covering an Egyptian
tailor's mummified wife, which is how it was
discovered in the 1800s when the mummy was donated to a museum.
Now if they really wanted
to hide this message I think they should have put
some underwear on the mummy because think about it. Someone discovers a mummy, sees underwear, what are they going to do? They're going to look underneath. They're going to find a
message on some mummy dick. And number 10 is the Voynich manuscript.
This final one is vastly considered the most mysterious book on the planet. The Voynich manuscript
is so old and confusing that many an argument has been had to how exactly it needs to be studied. Written by an anonymous author, the manuscript is almost
impossible to translate but some people claim that
it's actually a puzzle. The book, which in the 1800s
was part of a Jesuit library, is named after Wilfred Voynich, a Polish book dealer who came
into its possession in 1909.
It's an illustrated, handwritten codex penned in a language that
was previously unknown. To this day it's still not known exactly what the manuscript is or even what's said on its pages. Speaking of books, my very
first book just launched guys, and it is available right now in both paperback and audiobook. How's that for a segue way? Yes, this is the book that
